India:Coffee-bar firing case: No chargesheet yet

Monday, June 15th, 2009

CHANDIGARH: With suspension of two cops – Jaspal and Surjeet Singh — police have been trying to show zero-tolerance towards irregularities, but
loopholes continue to mar the functioning of Sector-36 police station. Both the cops were suspended for releasing the seized .32 bore pistol to accused Gurpreet Singh Chahal against norms.

The Sector-36 cops led by Inspector Anokh Singh have failed to frame a chargesheet against the accused in connection with the one-year-old case pertaining to Barista coffee bar firing incident.

The accused Gurpreet Singh Chahal was arrested in February 2008 and the case is still pending in district court.

The cops didn’t recommend cancellation of the accused’s arms license while he was booked for misusing his licensed revolver.

Moreover, the cops have made a mockery of the recently passed circular for re-examination of all seized material kept in the malkhanas of every police station.

The circular was issued by UT SSP SS Srivastava after arrest of former malkhana munshi of police station-17 Balbir Singh with a huge cache of ammunition. Officials directed all SHOs to personally examine the malkhana record.

Meanwhile, senior officials are yet to fix the responsibility on any cop for not taking the appropriate action when Chahal had fired three bullets on Ajay Singh Sandhu on June 7 at showroom market in Sector-35 .

Sources said when area cops were inspecting the spot, they had found some evidence of shooting but didn’t show it to senior officials.

Even in the Barista firing incident, police had registered a case after a gap of 10 days. Times of India

Prices at the Indian Coffee Association’s Thursday auctions fell as buyers stayed away due to high prices, traders said.
The total quantity on offer at the auction was 463.73 tonnes of which 93 tonnes were sold, an auctioneer said.
“All varieties of coffees on offer received very limited enquiry from exporters and domestic trade. Prices went down as sellers prices were higher than what buyers were willing to pay,” said a trader from Bangalore, who did not wish to be identified.
